British Airways aims high for Street Action
On Friday 11 September British Airways staff and their guests dusted down their old 70s gear and enjoyed a 70s music and comedy night at the BA Concorde Club to raise money for Street Action’s partner Umthombo Street Children in Durban, South Africa. Hosted by Shane Ritchie and entertained by the Bay City Rollers, over £6000 was raised on the night that will go towards Umthombo’s Safe Space. A big thank you to the Community Relations team at BA for their hard work and commitment to organising this event.
Safe Space specialist centre was opened in 2008 and offers a unique service to Durban’s street children. It hold therapeutic programmes including art, surfing and football as well as basic education, health advice, counselling, mentoring and rehabilitation. The centre is run by Umthombo’s social workers alongside the child and youth care workers. It forms an important component to Umthombo’s re-integration strategy. It enables children who have taken the decision to leave the streets to be properly prepared to be re-intergrated back into their communities, as well as beginning the process of dealing with the trauma of living on the streets.
Street Action are proud work in partnership with British Airways and are planning further fund-raising events for our work in South Africa.
