Joe Walker, director of Street Action UK and USA will be in San Francisco in October. He will be joined by Tom and Mandi Hewitt, founders of Umthombo Street Children. Street Action USA in partnership with the USF Umthombo Club and the USF Masters program in International Studies will be hosting an event called ‘2010 – an opportunity or crisis? Tom and Mandi Hewitt, have a long association with the University of San Francisco (USF). They helped set up the annual ‘South Africa today’ trip for students and the USF Umthombo club on campus and established close links with a number of departments and individuals in the university who have developed close connections with Umthombo’s work in South Africa. Tom and Mandi will talk about the challenges of 2010 and the politics that surround the phenomenon of the growing number of children who call the streets their home. During there time in San Francisco they will speak at a number of events at USF and in the city and will be promoting the development of the next phase of Umthombo’s work in South Africa.
